Bernhardt/Hamlet

by

Theresa Rebeck

Cornerstone Theatre Company is thrilled to announce our upcoming staged reading of Theresa Rebeck's 'Bernhardt/Hamlet.'

The performances will be at 7:30pm on November 21st and 22nd at Shaking the Tree Theatre, 823 SE Grant St.

Mark Twain once wrote: "There are five kinds of actresses: Bad actresses, fair actresses, good actresses, great actresses - and then there is Sarah Bernhardt."

Theresa Rebeck, brilliant author of 'Seminar,' 'Mauritius,' and many more indelible plays, debuted 'Bernhardt/Hamlet' on Broadway in 2018. This vibrant, witty, and thought-provoking work follows the incomparable Sarah Bernhardt as she takes on her most daring role yet—Hamlet.

Set in Paris in 1899, the play follows Bernhardt’s bold decision to defy expectations, gender norms, and theatrical tradition by playing Shakespeare’s iconic prince.

As critics, colleagues, and even her lover push back, Bernhardt must navigate the tensions between art and commerce, ambition and authenticity, and the struggle to retain relevance and her place in the pantheon as the world threatens to move on without her.
